CHICAGO, IL (January 25, 2017) – The Central Conference Executive Board has nominated Danny Martinez, pastor of Grace Covenant Church in Spring  Valley, California, to succeed Jerome Nelson as superintendent. Nelson is retiring at the end of this summer after serving three terms.

Martinez was nominated by the board through a process that began with more than 35 names submitted by constituents for consideration, said Dan Teefey, chair of the board, which also served as the search committee. After reviewing all the applications, the board engaged seven of the candidates for further consideration and interviewed four final candidates. The interview pool reflected both gender and ethnic diversity, and included candidates both serving within and beyond the conference.

Teefey said the committee was impressed with Martinez’s experience. “Pastor Danny has led in nearly every capacity of the church,” he said. “His background includes lay ministry, youth pastor, worship leader, and senior pastor. He also serves as the president of the Ministry of Hispanic Covenant Churches in the United States (MHIPE).”

Teefey added, “Pastor Danny loves God, loves the church, and loves the Covenant. We are excited for him to follow God’s call and serve the Central Conference.”

Martinez said, “It is with great humility and gratefulness that I accept the nomination for superintendent of the Central Conference. I am a child of the Covenant and the result of much personal investment by our denominational leaders, pastors, staff, friends, and family. I am very aware that I stand on the shoulders of the many incredible people who have built a place where we can work together for the kingdom of God. I ask for your prayers and support in this transition.”

The nomination will be presented for action to the Annual Meeting of the Central Conference to be held in April. If elected, he will be installed at the Covenant Annual Meeting in June and begin serving on September 1, 2017.

SPEAKERS:

April 27th at 7:00 pm – Ministerial Association Annual Meeting – Continuing Education

Dr. Boaz Johnson:

Growing up in the slums of New Delhi, Dr. Boaz Johnson’s search for the meaning of life began early. “I encountered the reality of poverty and injustice, and high-caste Hindu learning.” He wrestled with this dichotomy, and expanded his spiritual search. “The philosophy of life taught and espoused by Jesus the Messiah, as seen in the Gospels, captured my mind and imagination. I realized that in this person lay the answers to the questions that plagued my mind.” Jesus continues to fascinate Dr. Johnson, in his life and work as an expert on the relationship of evangelical Christianity to world religions.

April 28th at 2:00 pm – Central Conference Annual Meeting: Breakout Sessions

A. Starting an Outreach Ministry – Presented by Rev. Debbie Griffith Samuels

Has your church looked at the community and decided to start a New Outreach Ministry but, you’re not sure where to start?

This workshop will offer some ideas on when, how and why a church should start an Outreach Ministry in their Community. Observe a panel discussion of churches in the Conference who have taken this step and obtain resources to get started.

B. The Covenant: Engaging our Revivalist and Sacramental Heritage – Presented by Rev. Peter Sjoblom

From our denominations founding we have experienced two important veins running through our life together.  One is steeped in the Lutheran Pietistic tradition, and the other with strong Baptistic and revivalist tones.  As we came together we decided on a healthy arrangement between the two. (Baptism in the Covenant for instance.)

History has shown when we do not honor this diversity, we keep trying to convert each other.  We invite you to join this conversation, not to resolve this ongoing dialogue but to inform us of the wideness and breadth of God’s church.

C. Immigration: The Realities and Challenges Before Us – Presented by Rev. David Swanson

During the past months the realities and challenges for immigrants have changed quickly. For some of our churches these changes have been deeply felt. Join us for a moderated panel focusing on current immigration policies, how communities are being impacted, and how we can support those who have been adversely impacted.
